How Using a Menstrual Calendar Can Increase Your Chances of Getting Pregnant

When my husband and I began talking about having a family, I began doing a lot of research on things such as my health, fertility and ways to increase our chances of getting pregnant. Pregnancy and parenthood are both big steps and I wanted to make sure that I was as prepared as I could be for both. One thing I learned both from research and from personal experience is that timing is everything. Since there is a time in your cycle that you are at your most fertile, it is good to create and chart a menstrual calendar to help you know when the best days are or you to try to conceive each month.

A “normal” cycle is considered to be 28 days. Your cycle might be longer or shorter than this. Again, for a “normal” cycle, ovulation will typically take place close to day 11-14. But, what is normal anyway? Using a menstrual calendar will let you know when you typically ovulate. You can’t always go by what you read in textbooks, so taking charge and charting your basal body temperature on a menstrual calendar will give you the best idea of your most fertile days. To create a menstrual calendar, you can find a free one to download online or create your own (which is what I chose to do). Every morning you will take your temperature with a basal body thermometer and mark it on your menstrual calendar. When you ovulate, you will notice and increase in your basal body temperature. After you chart a menstrual calendar for 3-6 months, you can compare charts to see what the average day/days are that you ovulate, thus letting you know when you are typically at your most fertile each month.

Using a menstrual calendar is a great place to start when you are trying to get pregnant. It gives you the basic information you need to know when you will have the best opportunity to conceive each month. In addition to using a menstrual calendar, you can also increase your odds of getting pregnant by other methods as well.
