Is Tubal Ligation Reversal the Way for You to Become Pregnant Again?

Each year in the United States, at least six percent of the 650,000 women who have had their "tubes tied" change their mind. They decide that they want a child, or another child, and find that a tubal ligation reversal surgery may be their best chance of doing so. Usually this decision is brought about by a change of circumstances in their lives.

Although having a child is the reason most women seek out a tubal ligation reversal, some seek it as a means to provide relief to the side effects of their original surgery to "tie their tubes". A woman who suffers through these side effects, called the post tubal ligation syndrome, may being go through any number of health problems.

These problems can range from what looks like early onset menopause as well as a worsening of their PMS symptoms. They can hot and cold flashes. Their libido can be close to not existing. They can have trouble sleeping and have erratic mood swings.

Although a tubal ligation reversal may be one answer to any of the above it is not the only answer and several points need to be considered to determine just what is best. Once you have picked a potential surgeon, he is going to need to know your past surgical history such as what form of tubal ligation you actually had.

Another factor that must be considered is your age. Most women know that even without the surgery, as a woman gets older she just has less chance of having a successful pregnancy. The same applies to a woman seeking a tubal ligation reversal. If you are over 40, you need to discuss your possibilities with your surgeon. Additionally, another factor to be discussed with your surgeon, whether over 40 or not, is how much damage has been done to your fallopian tubes either during the first surgery or over time since then. All these will play into a tubal ligation reversal surgery's chances of success.

Women who have had only a very small section of their tubes removed will have a better chance for success in a reversal surgery. Those who had surgery that used clips or rings stand a better chance as well.

To help your surgeon go over all this, he will need the notes from your first surgery and anything that applies that has happened since. He will then discuss the whole matter with you to decide if a tubal ligation reversal surgery is actually the best course of action for you.

He should have an initial consultation with you after reviewing the notes and together you will weigh all the pertinent factors such as those discussed above. Hopefully you will find out that having a tubal ligation reversal surgery will help alleviate your problems, if that is why you wanted the surgery, or will bring a bouncing bundle of joy into your life.
