Synthetic Progesterone For Women - Is It A Cure Or A Curse?

Women have been prescribed synthetic progesterone by their doctors for a variety of menstrual health problems, and whilst it has provided most women with tremendous relief from their symptoms, a small minority have reported some unpleasant side effects. The drug Aygestin is prescribed for various problems such as endometriosis, where the lining of the uterus does not completely come away each menstrual cycle, and to correct the absence of menstrual periods, and to control heavy and prolonged bleeding from the womb due to hormonal imbalance. Before you take any type of synthetic hormone, you should find out exactly how it treats your symptoms, and any potential side effects that you may have. Like most drugs, the benefits seem to outweigh the side effects.

Women may sometimes have a deficiency of progesterone, a hormone women require in order to regulate their menstrual cycle. When this hormone is deficient, it can lead to endometriosis and other menstrual problems. Aygestin is prescribed in order to simulate the body's own progesterone and correct any hormonal imbalances.

All progesterone drugs are associated with certain side effects, but most of the unpleasant symptoms affect the digestive system, and range from nausea, or dizziness to actual vomiting. It is a good idea to take the medication in the evening, before going to bed which may help to eliminate most of the discomfort; often such symptoms are transitory and they will disappear within a month or two at the latest. However some women have reported some nasty side effects such as heavy bleeding and severe pain, making it impossible for them to continue using the drug.

The side effects that are causes for real concern include severe headaches and fainting, limb numbness and rapid weight gains, loss of vision or double vision, and yellowing of the skin or eyes. In any of these much rarer instances, stop taking the medication and see a doctor or health care professional immediately.

This is a brief outline of the many health problems in women that Aygestin may be prescribed to treat, and some of the side effects you may experience. All women react differently, so speak to your doctor if you have any questions.
